Heat pump replacement cost (2026): what published sources say
Heat pump prices vary more than almost any other home system, because "a heat pump" can mean a single ducted unit swapped onto existing ducts or a whole-home multi-zone install. Here is what several public sources report.
| Source | What it measures | Published figure |
|---|---|---|
| HomeAdvisor | Heat pump install, assumes working air handler and ducts | $4,236 to $7,942 typical, $6,087 average |
| HVACFIND Price Index | Heat pump replacement, 1,500 to 2,500 sq ft home | $6,950 (low) · $9,750 (typical) · $13,700 (high) |
| EnergySage | Whole-home quotes on its marketplace, all system types | $15,393 national average before incentives (ducted $14,529) |
Why the numbers disagree
- Scope: the lower ranges assume existing ductwork and an air handler. HomeAdvisor lists ductwork separately at $3,000 to $7,500.
- Whole-home vs. single unit: EnergySage averages full-home projects, including multi-zone ductless.
- Region: EnergySage reports state averages from about $9,757 (North Carolina) to $24,482 (Massachusetts) before incentives.
Incentives
EnergySage reports the federal 30% tax credit for heat pumps expired for systems installed after 2025. State and utility rebates may still apply. Check your state energy office and utility.
About these numbers: the figures above are published estimates from the third-party sources linked, as shown on their sites when we checked in October 2026. They are not HVAC Quote Check data, and different sources measure different things (equipment only vs. installed, existing ducts vs. new, national vs. marketplace quotes). Your price depends on your home, region and scope.
